A CMV inspection is required when the trailer has a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating over 3,000 pounds or the gross combination weight rating of the vehicle plus the trailer is 10,001 pounds or more. The RMV created a one-page poster to help illustrate these commercial testing requirements. Beginning on March 21, 2018, the Section 5 Division of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) will be issuing two new Dealer Plate Decal types: M – Manufacture. W – Wholesale Dealer. All Manufacturers and Wholesalers who have been issued a Dealer Registration will be issued the appropriate “M” or “W” decal.
Registering a Vehicle in Massachusetts

Registration fees vary by plate type. A title fee and the applicable sales tax will also be collected. Additional information about fees, forms and procedures can be found at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles site, but below you'll find some common situations.
I've just purchased a car from a dealer.
In order to register your vehicle, the Registry of Motor Vehicles requires you to provide them with a completed Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1) form. How we process your RMV-1 form depends on the type of purchase you've made.
My dealer offers electronic vehicle registration.
Once your vehicle is added to your policy, please have your dealer complete and sign the form, and fax it to GEICO, Attn: your policy number, at (866) 955-3146. Once we receive a completed and signed copy of the form from your dealer, we will complete the insurance portions and fax the form back to the number provided.
My dealer does not offer electronic vehicle registration.
Once your vehicle is added to your policy, you may request your RMV form for your vehicle. From your mobile device, you can request the form when you log in to your policy through the GEICO Mobile app. You can also call us at (800) 841-3000.
I've just purchased a car from an individual.
To add your vehicle, you can log in to your policy and create your RMV-1 form with ease. Once created, you will be able to print and complete the form in order to take it to the Registry.

I've just moved into Massachusetts.
You will need to log in to your policy and select the 'Change Address' link to update your address. Once your address has been updated, look for the 'MA Vehicle Registration' link located under the 'What's Next?' section to create your RMV form.
When moving into Massachusetts with a leased vehicle, you will need to obtain the title for your vehicle in order to register in Massachusetts. From your mobile device, you can request your title when you log in to your policy through the GEICO Mobile app. You can also call us at (800) 841-3000. We will gladly request the title for you from your leasing company. You will receive your title in approximately 4–6 weeks, along with your RMV-1 form to register your vehicle.
